Battle of the Pyramids, fought on July 21, 1798 between the French army in Egypt under Napoleon Bonaparte and local Mamluk forces. This decisive French victory marked the end of 700 years of Mamluk rule in Egypt, but Nelson victory at the Battle of the Nile few days later put an end to French ambitions.
